SMB College Group Apprenticeship Student Impresses in Guild of Bricklayers Competition!

SMB College Group Student and Barratt Homes Apprentice, Liam Evans, recently secured second place in the Welsh regional heat of the Guild of Bricklayers competition!

During the competition, Liam, who studies his Level 2 Bricklaying apprenticeship at the college’s Stephenson Campus, competed in a skills test to build a solid wall in English Bond with an attached two-brick pier with decorative features.

Liam came second overall, winning a cash prize, a Marshalltown Bricklaying Trowel and an OX Tape Measure along with a plaque.

Liam said ‘The competition went really good and I am so happy to have got second place. I learnt how to work under pressure, and overall it was a really exciting and rewarding experience. I’m very grateful for the college and Andy Martin for putting me forward, it shows that they had faith in me.’

Andy Martin, Brickwork Lecturer at SMB College Group, added ‘Liam is a promising, well-mannered and quality-focused apprentice who will have a successful career as a Bricklayer. I had a lot of confidence in Liam going into the competition.’

‘I am very proud of Liam’s accomplishments since he first started his apprenticeship. Coming from a sports background and changing his whole career around, his aspirations are to complete his apprenticeship and then head to Australia to pursue his career further. I wish him all the best for the future.’

Liam has also been entered for the Skills Build Competition in June, for which the college wishes him he very best of luck.
