Leicestershire company has built its success on strong foundations

Leicester-based company QDTS Construction are one of the region’s biggest business success stories, growing turnover from £550,000 to £14 Million in just 3 years!

Starting with one member of staff back in July 2014 – Founder and Managing Director, Terry Benson – and now with a workforce of 22, it’s been a whirlwind 3 years for the QDTS team who have no plans to slow down…

So, what is the secret to their success?

Recognised as ‘2019 Employer of the Year’

This accolade from a Local Business Awards event, Niche Awards, reflects QDTS’s internal employee development strategy which is all about investment in the future of the team and of the industry itself. Construction is facing record skills shortages, predicted to worsen in the coming years and QDTS are at the forefront of creating solutions to address this.

Valuing apprentices

QDTS invest heavily in their apprentices and currently have 5 working across the business. All have regular training, coaching and guidance and will be actively encouraged to stay and further their careers when their apprenticeship ends; as an example of this, a current apprentice bricklayer who joined the team over 2 years ago is now training for NVQ Level 4 Trainee Site Foreman.

Keeping staff 100% engaged

When it comes to training, everyone is given the necessary resources to grow. With a wide variety of NVQ courses running at any one time plus regular online learning modules on industry standards, there’s plenty of opportunity to realise potential, operate best practice and work safely (and pizza always helps at the team meetings!).

Project diversity

Being multi-disciplined, the QDTS team can undertake a diverse range of projects across all sectors, some of which have been very high profile – such as the Emporium Building in Birmingham city centre and the conversion of Grade II listed Packington Hall into high spec luxury apartments and houses.

Caring about the local community

As well as taking their Environmental duty of care very seriously, QDTS support the local supply chain wherever possible and also works closely with local schools and community charity projects. Their genuine commitment to ‘give back’ sees them sponsoring junior football teams, taking part in cycle challenges, investing in local charities with sponsorship such as the Bodie Hodges Foundation ‘Bodie’s Santa Fun Run’ and supporting education initiatives; they have even created a nature area for Croft Primary School in their spare time, involving numerous members of the QDTS team.

The QDTS Construction ensure they go that extra mile to support their chosen charities. In October of 2019 the team took part in the ‘West Midlands Brain Game Event’ as platinum sponsors to help raise money for the Marie Curie (West Midlands) charity. The event held at the ICC managed to raise a staggering £169,500 in total.

When we asked MD Terry Benson about QDTS’s achievements he told us:

“Our success and impressive growth is ultimately down to the team. They are all experts in their own field and clients regularly tell us how impressed they have been with the level of expertise, knowledge and understanding they’ve seen.”

He added:

“What makes me particularly proud is the team’s desire to give back to the local community. This is important to me and is encouraged in the business, but I was still blown away when they recently spent their own time at a weekend to create a much-needed nature area for Croft Primary School. My ideas are one thing- it’s the team around me that bring them to life.”
